Here are some concertina recordings mostly from the first quarter of the
20th century. At that time, recordings were made mechanically (usually termed
'acoustic') using sound captured by a large recording horn, which
indirectly drove a needle and inscribed the sound onto a wax disk.
Recordings made this way do not have the quality of the later
(made after February 1926 for the recordings here) electrical recordings, and
many of the 78rpm records used for transcription
were badly scratched and worn, as will be evident from the labels . While most later or unworn 78rpms will play
well with stylii of around 2.5 to 3 mil diameter, I have had to use huge 3.5 and
4 mil 'diamond nails' to bring out detail and reduce wear distortion. The
transcriptions have been processed to try to increase the audibility of the
notes played, rather than a good sonic reproduction of the perfomance, and all
transcriptions here are new.
Alexander Prince (1874-1928; real name Alexander Sutherland) was born in
Scotland, but spent most of his later life in Nottingham when not on tour. An
interview with Prince published in 1906 may be found on this site
here.
A discography of Alexander Prince recordings has been published in the ICA's
PICA Volume 9 at the end of 2012(and an updated version also here), and has
been followed by a discography of other
players also published on this site. The recordings here have been published in response to
requests for a Prince CD, and are the bulk of my Prince 78rpm collection. But with
almost 70 sides of around 2.5 to 3 minutes, you will need 3 CDs in audio format
to contain them all. I have
attempted to list them in order of recording, using release dates where no
firm recording dates are available. More recordings will be added as they are
obtained and restored, and some cylinders will also be added.
A quick summary of label families will serve to explain some of the multiple
releases. Columbia, Columbia-Rena, and Regal were labels of the Columbia Company,
and Prince signed an exclusive contract with Columbia in 1912, which lasted
until his death. Zonophone and The Twin were the budget labels of HMV
(formerly G&T). Winner were the budget label of Edison-Bell, a wholly
British owned company, and unrelated to the Edison label except in their
very earliest period.
